Jul 25, 2023Virginia Massage Championship Comes To Fredericksburg In September
Jun 05, 2023FREDERICKSBURG, VA — The inaugural Virginia Massage Championship is coming to Fredericksburg in September. The two-day event invites masseuses from around the region to hone their craft, share their skills, and compete for medals.
The championship will be held at the Holiday Inn Fredericksburg Conference Center on Sept. 16 and Sept. 17.
The event was founded by Shawn Stewart, a massage therapist based in Fredericksburg. Stewart has competed in national and international events for Team USA. In June, at the World Massage Championship hosted by the International Massage Association, Stewart was named the fourth best sports massage therapist in the world.
"My vision is to build a network of massage therapists in Virginia and provide a space where we can connect, learn, and grow together," Stewart said in a news release. "Our mission statement is to create a state Championship that inspires, unites, grows, and educates the massage therapy community and builds awareness among others of just how massage can affect our community as a whole in a positive way."
In the Virginia Massage Championship, masseuses will be judged based on the flow of the massage, ergonomics, technique, innovation of new methods, client contact, and feedback from the recipient.
The competition's categories include Swedish massage, freestyle massage, sports massage, and chair massage. Each entrant can choose to compete in two categories.
Stewart said he was inspired to start the competition thanks to his love for the discipline.
"I love doing massage because I really enjoy making people feel better and it is my passion," Stewart said. "That's why I value your time because I know what it's like to take time out of your day and not feel better after a massage. So, I always give 110 percent to make sure your time spent with me was worth it."
Stewart owns and operates Stone Tower Massage in Fredericksburg.
